The history of Nilimella
Located right on the edge of Sodankylä’s town centre, Nilimella has been welcoming travellers with northern hospitality for several decades. What started as a modest site has grown into Finland’s northernmost four-star campsite over the past 20 years of dedicated work, with new accommodation options and enhanced services.
Friendly service and natural tranquillity for over 50 years
Nilimella’s warm and inviting campsite has been welcoming visitors since the 1970s. The current owners have maintained and developed the site since 2005, steadily improving facilities and camping services. Today, Nilimella is Finland’s northernmost four-star campsite, offering a unique combination of Lapland’s natural tranquillity and stunning scenery alongside convenient local services.

From humble beginnings to high-quality accommodation
Through continuous development, we have added four stylish premium apartments, allowing guests to fully enjoy the natural beauty of the Kitinen riverbank. The riverside restaurant Piitsi Pub was upgraded to such success that it won Hartwall’s “Best Terrace in Finland” competition in its very first summer after renovations. Today, the Piitsi Pub, with its glass terrace, has become a favourite spot for both travellers and locals and is open year round and available for private events as well.
Development at Nilimella is ongoing. The next step is the opening of the Arctic Luxury Suites, which will elevate the site to a new level and attract more international visitors to the Sodankylä region.

Where is Nilimella Resort & Camping located?
Nilimella Resort & Camping is located in the centre of Sodankylä, on the banks of the Kitinen River. Conveniently located at the crossroads of Highways 4 and 5, we are easily accessible by car or public transport from both southern and northern Finland. Major Lapland travel destinations are within a three-hour drive, allowing you to take day trips to places such as the Arctic Circle, Saariselkä, Levi, Inari and nearby national parks, before returning to Nilimella in the evening.
What accommodation options are available at Nilimella?
The Nilimella Resort & Camping offers a range of accommodation options for your trip to Sodankylä. We have a total of 14 apartments with saunas, suitable for 4–6 people. Four beachfront apartments equipped with a fireplace and kitchen area are ideal for longer holidays. A new addition to our range is the Arctic Luxury Suites, offering luxury accommodation. There are a total of 10 suites in the holiday village. In total there are 27 different accommodation options:

- Six-person standard apartment – 6 in total
- Four-person saunaless apartment – 1 in total
- Riverside apartment – 4 in total
- Arctic Luxury Suites – 10 in total
In addition, we have Finland’s northernmost four-star campsite, with a total of 80 caravan sites and tent sites on a grass field for hikers.

The Nilimella Resort & Camping, just a short walk from Sodankylä’s centre, offers everything you need for a comfortable stay. Our reception and service buildings provide kitchens, showers, and toilets, including accessible facilities with an adapted shower for seniors and guests with mobility needs.
Enjoy delicious finger food, alcoholic beverages, and live sports at our riverside restaurant and guest favourite, Piitsi Pubi. The pub also hosts events throughout the year. For cosy evening, guests can book a private sauna, gather around the campfire to roast sausages, or enjoy family-friendly fun at our indoor and outdoor playgrounds. In summertime, you can take a swim at the beach or play beach volleyball on our courts.
